First impressions are often misleading, but very important in many situations, especially in our novel Pride and Prejudice. People have even written entire books on first impressions.
Read the following quotes below and answer the question below in at least 5 sentences.
“First impressions are often the truest, as we find (not infrequently) to our cost, when we have been wheedled out of them by plausible professions or studied actions. A man's look is the work of years; it is stamped on his countenance by the events of his whole life, nay, more, by the hand of nature, and it is not to be got rid of easily.” -- William Hazlett“Don't be over self-confident with your first impressions of people.” --Chinese Proverb
Do you think that first impressions are as important today as they were in the Regency Period?
I do not think that first impressions are as important today then in the regency period. But, I do think they are still some what important. They are still important because, a lot of important people go by first impressions and if you don't make a good one you could possibly miss out.

ReplyDeleteI think they are important today but maybe even more back then. With arranged marriages and being rich they were always judged. Today in society we can look at people and make first impressions but not necessarily are able to tell about how wealthy they are all the time. In the regency period they were judged more on how they acted, dressed and their income. It's not that we don't see these judgments in our present time but I believe we become more understanding and open to first impressions as we have back then.

ReplyDeleteI don't think that first impressions are as important now days as they were back then. Even if we don't think much of a person, they usually get a second chance. In the Regency Period, if anyone thought suspicious of anyone, they wouldn't be given a chance to give a different impression. People were a lot more judgmental as well because if clothing wasn't liked, that was a bad first impression. People have bad days and just because they act a certain way one time doesn't mean that's how they always are. You never know what might have happened to them earlier in their day or their life in general.
First impressions are not as important today as they were in the Regency Period. Most people are not in as much of a hurry to get married as what they were in that age. Therefore, we are able to get to know other over a period of time and we don't have to base everything on first impressions. I feel that not basing everything on first impression is a good thing about society today, because there are alot of flaws in people that many don't see with first impression. Also, you don't know if you could handle living and marrying someone on first impression, so I agree with Miss Lucas's quote saying it is rare to find happiness in marriage especially when their marriage if based on the first impression if a man was rich.
ReplyDeleteI do think that first impressions are very important. They are just as important now as they were during the Regency Period. Back in the Regency Period, women and men needed to make a good first impression to attract friends and potential spouses. In this day in age, when you first meet someone who could be a potential friend, neighbor, coworker, employee, or boss, it is highly important to maintain a good first impression. When one makes a "good" first impression, that person should be kind, courteous, well mannered, and not rude. First impressions help maintain a good connection for you and the other person because if you do not make good first impressions, it is a lot harder to mend the broken connection. I would rather not break the connection in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI think first impressions today are not as important as they were back then. First impressions are still important today as most first impressions are set as the precedent for any relationship and are very hard to change. However, in the Regency Period, first impressions were the basis of people's reputation. If a person were not of important stature or did not suit the physical characteristics desired, the person would be thrown out of contention for any chance to interlope with the other. This is why I think first impressions are not as important as they were during the Regency Period.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think first impressions are very important today. When you go into a job interview, if the person hiring doesn't like you from the start you probably aren't getting the job. Or if you go to the interview in your lounge pants and a sweatshirt, the employer won't think you're as proffessional or as determined to get the job as the person who showed up in a suite. But not only in the professional world are first impressions so important, now-a-days, as well as in the past, people base their whole assumptions of you on first impressions. So it's always important to look your best and act like yourself, unless you're at home on your day off.
ReplyDeleteI think first impressions were a lot more important back then, than they are now. They still play a big role in how we may view someone, but if that person wants, they could normally change a bad opinion of themselves around. Most people now a days are given a second chance and we aren't in as big of a hurry as they used to be. Like shown in the book, first impressions were very important with whom they could marry. They were such a hurry to find a husband, and thought that they must always be perfect.

ReplyDeleteI do not think that first impressions are that important now a days. Back then they rarely saw other people so their first impressions meant a lot more. Now, first impressions are only important in certain situations. Like for instance, when you are going for a very highly company. Yet most jobs depend on your resume instead of your first impression.

ReplyDeleteFirst impressions are not as important today as they were back in the Regency Period. Don't read to far into it, because they are still important today. Today, first impressions, have the chance to change. Back then they did not have the chance to change at all. People back then were not given more than one chance to show that the real person deep inside them. So once they gave off the wrong first impression, they couldn't go back. Even simple things could give people a bad first impression. You just had to watch yourself.
I do think that first impressions are very important. the reason that i think this is because people always want to a leave a good first impression especially at a job interview or meeting your girlfriend/boyfriends parents etc. I do think however back then that first impressions were even more important because being rich back then was a big deal and now days its one of those things that is always around. Like now days people can marry who ever they want poor or rich, but back then it was highly recommended that women marry a man with money and property.
ReplyDeleteI think that first impressions are just as important today as they were in the Regency Period. Back then it was important to make good first impressions to grab the attention of the right man or woman. A first impression can turn into something more or less depending on how you want to portray yourself to others. Today with how our job placement is and how important schooling has been the past years first impressions are key to a lot of things. They are key to finding the right job and the right group of people to work with. Without a good first impression the person hiring you may see you as someone who doesn't work well with others or doesn't take their job seriously. So it's extremely important to keep first impressions on the good side!
ReplyDeleteI think that first impressions are important but not as important as they were back then. When you first meet someone that is what you take of them until you get to know them. In the Regency Period first impressions were a lot more important. The reputation was very much based on the social standing that you had. If you were not of higher rank you may not have gotten the respect you deserved. Now days you are given a second chance and not many people are as judgmental based on your income and on how wealthy you are.

ReplyDeleteI think that first impressions are still very important today as they were in the Regency Period. During the Regency Period, the first impressions of people decided their reputation of the other person. I still believe that first impressions are being used today in this society. For example, if a person was to go to an interview, and the first impression they did was mouth off to them, they probably would not receive the job. Now if the person was smiling and talking like they would thoroughly enjoy what they would be doing, they probably would receive the job. A first impression means a lot to some individuals. Impressions are used to be directed in the right path and not take the empty path with nothing to concur at the end. First impressions are a key to unlock the right door!
I believe that first impressions are a big deal. With everything, though, it always depends on the circumstance of a situation. Now a days people judge on everything just like they did back then. Judgments are made every second of everyday until the day you die. It's a natural thing that people do, and I believe that some people only go off of what they first know of somebody. I don't think this is right because you never know what that person may be going through at that moment that the first impression is being taken.
ReplyDeleteFirst Impressions are not as important as they were in the Regency period. However, they do still hold some importance in today's society. A first impression can be the difference between getting or not getting a job. Like in the book Pride and Prejudice, first impressions still hold a lot of importance in finding a husband or even dating. When first meeting someone, most people immediately decide whether or not they think someone to be an acceptable husband or wife or in this advanced society, whether they are even worth dating or not. Not only that but when interviewing for a job the interviewee must convey a positive attitude and appealing personality to be considered for hire. A difference I found between the book and today is that the people of Meryton automatically asumed Mr. Bingley was an acceptable human being as well as his friend because they were wealthy. Mr. Bingley turned out to be very friendly and personable where as Mr. Darcy was actually quite opposite. Today most people assume righ people to be snobbish just because they have money. This could be true about some wealthy people but not all. This is a complete one eighty compared to what they thought in the Regency period.

ReplyDeleteI think that first impressions are equally important. I do believe that you should be dressed up, or dressed to suit the situation, if your going for a job interview. This way, the employer(s), know that you are serious about the job. First impressions could be the difference between people liking you too. If you act like a complete retard, people may not want to get to know you, or to hang around you again. So, I do believe that first impressions are equally as important now as they were in the Regency period.

ReplyDeleteI think First impressions are very important today as much as they were back then. I think that you should be dressed up when it is the right time. I think you should always be respectful in a new place or meeting new people. If you dont come off right to someone it could possible cause problems in the future with them. So i think first impressions mean a lot and are very important today and back in the Regency period.
I do not think that first impression today are as important as they were back then. Back in the day it was all about your wealth and what blood line you came from. Now all of that really doesn't matter. People today get to know others by just talking and finding things in common. Back then it did not matter if you had something in common. If you were rich, you needed to have rich friends
ReplyDeleteI think that first impressions are just as important today as they were in the Regency period. First impressions are what people tend to judge you by for the rest of your life. If you make a bad first impression a person can remember that for as long as you know them. However, unlike in the regency period you can change the way people think of you based off your first impression on them. This is because people of today are a little less mellow compared to the people of that time period.
ReplyDeleteI think first impressions today are not as important as it was back then. In the Regency period, they judge you more on physical appearance, and your reputation. In today's society people don't judge you by your physical appearance and reputation that much, but it is important to make a good first impression to get a job. Thats what i think about first impressions

ReplyDeleteI think that first impressions are still very important today maybe even more then they were back in the day. Today some people won't even look at you or notice that a person is there if they do not make a good first impression. Also back in that period people didn't really need to make a good first impression because if a person was important or supposed to be noticed everyone already knew about him/her and just noticed that person. Then today when getting a job the first impression is everything in an interview. If someone came in wearing a dirty shirt and jeans their chances of getting the job would go down because of their physical appearance at the job interview.

ReplyDeleteFirst impressions back then were way more important then it is now. They way you dressed and acted is even more important. How much money you had was very important too. Life back then was way harder then it is now.
I don't think they are as important today because glancing at somebody and saying what you think of them could be totally opposite of what they actually are. People are stereotyped by the way they look and dressed but that doesn't necessarily mean they are bad people. I believe that back then, it was a big thing becuase trying to find somebody with wealth and good looking would be harder to do. Some people may dress, act, and look more different because they've been hurt and not supported by their family.
